Know Title IX
With the school year rapidly approaching, most team summer practices have already begun, so now is the best time to learn about Title IX. Title IX is a comprehensive federal law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any federally funded education program or activity. This means equality for every student within every sport, no matter the gender.
Equality within athletics, especially girls’ athletics is extremely important because we need to end gender differences in all aspects of life, and sports are a perfect place to show off equality. Women have fought for years to be taken seriously on the court and field and have had to work harder to prove their worth. We are finally at a place in society where women are celebrated for their athleticism; lets keep it that way!
According to the Legal Aid Society’s fact sheet on Title IX “Studies show that young women who play sports are more likely to graduate from high school, have higher grades, and score higher on standardized tests than non-athletes. Girls who play sports in high school earn 7% higher wages working as adults and those who play in college more often reach top management positions.” Join a team now, earn a higher wage in the future, sounds good to me!
Ensuring your team is getting equal treatment is your right. If you feel like you or your team is being discriminated against in any way, speak up. You will not be penalized for reaching out and making a difference.
