Speaking of Mentors…
Last week's Role Model Blog post from Molecular Biologist, Sylvia Norman, highlighted the importance of mentors in her life and career. This week, NYT columnist, Thomas Friedman, echoed those same sentiments in his piece “It Takes a Mentor”.
Reading his article, I was delighted to hear about the recent research study from the Gallup organization on education to workplace success. Their findings are summed up as “Successful students had one or more teachers who were mentors and took a real interest in their aspirations, and they had an internship related to what they were learning in school.”
Our role models couldn't agree more. Over the course of the 250 or so interviews we have conducted with highly successful women, we have heard these two factors come up time and time again. Many of these women share insights into finding and having mentors and how to pursue and land internships. But that's not all, they take it a step further and share how to maximize the benefits of these career boosters.
