Hard Work Can Get You There

Hard Work Can Get You There My first career dream started as a little girl when I thought, “I’d like to be the first female President of the US.” Through school, however, my interests lied with science and math. I became fascinated with the different organ systems in the body while in high school and I had aspirations of going into marine biology. My favorite creature at the time was the Orca whale. Approaching college and deciding on a major, I realized the marine life would really limit my geographic location. I also wanted to follow a path for my talents. Since math was my strongest subject, I thought I would try out accounting. Though I was good at math, I was not passionate about it and accounting involves more than just math skills. With a lot of academic success previously, when I failed our first accounting exam, I panicked. I decided to think about a new path to a career. I didn’t want something that others told me I should be good at, but something that I would really enjoy, even if it required a lot of work and set backs to get there. I visited a career fair and saw a booth for Veterinary Medicine. From that point on, my main focus was to become a veterinarian. My college courses were tough and I needed a competitive GPA to even be considered for veterinary school. Through study adjustments to get me on track, I improved my grades and applied to veterinary school. It wasn’t enough, however, and after being wait-listed, I was rejected. It’s hard to feel like you fail when you become accustomed to success. I took a year to work a few jobs, save some money and re-applied. To my delight, I was accepted into Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine. I had a tremendous experience and met life-long friends. I couldn’t even imagine 10 years ago how incredible this journey would be. Although you may have a few set backs, persistence and hard work will allow you to obtain your dreams.
