Tech as an African American Teenage Girl
Have you ever had the spark or feeling to do something great and create something that no one has ever seen before? Have you ever had that feeling in multiple activities, where that spark just tickles the creative sparks in your mind? It might be hard to understand, but I get that feeling about once or twice a day. Ever since I was little girl, I have always been a “creatively insane” person. The type of person who is not afraid to get their hands dirty or to create beautiful things in everything I do. One way I do this is through technology.
I have learned that technology can lead to open doors of possibilities. To find or to create something that is beautiful to help impact the world, in so many places. What I also learned is that there are some challenges with technology, as well. The three challenges that I have with technology are also the reason that compels me to love and pursue technology. Being a girl, an African-American, and a teenager in technology. Being a teenager is hard enough especially when you're trying to find your identity in life. I’ve learned so far that there are so many talents that identify a person, but it’s hard trying to incorporate what you love with being successful. Being a girl and an African American is a challenge. Not just to me but to other African- American women as well. Silicon Valley isn’t very diverse with women, or African American women. When thinking of technology, people think the CEO is an old white man, but technology isn’t like that, and I want to do something about it.
At least once a day, I ask myself the following questions: 1) What do I want to be when I grow up? 2) How can I incorporate my gifts and talents into a career? And 3) How do I prepare for this type of career? I absolutely love technology and that's my creative side. I love working with my hands and creating something on the computer. I like to sit down and see how the computer works so I can create something better. I also love to perform on stage and enjoy sharing my passion through performance. I have so many great things that I want to do in life. I have discovered that my passions simply sum up to creativity. Frankly, being creative can be somewhat confusing; it comes in many different forms. I was lucky; I realize that my passions are technology and performing arts. I understand that I can exercise my creative side in performing arts and technology. I don’t have to choose, I will combine both. I see myself being a director, or creating animated movies or leading my own technology company. I have learned to incorporate my passion into what I want to be when I grow up. So, no matter what you love to do, use it to the best of your abilities. If it’s technology, don't let anyone stop you from learning and creating apps, websites, or games with a simple computer. Girls can be creative with technology and make it their own! I did!
