Million Women Mentors Launch Conference
Yesterday, Career Girls had the pleasure of being a part of the Million Women Mentors California Chapter’s launch conference in San Francisco! Million Women Mentors is an amazing organization that helps young girls find and accept mentorship as well as teaches women how to become great mentors specifically within the STEM fields. To be a mentor you need to be passionate, caring and patient. This is no easy task and it takes a special type of person to become a mentor. Mentorship is something Career Girls believes in strongly. We speak of it often, as do our role models, because finding a person to help support you on your journey will put you miles ahead of others.
The word mentor may sound intimidating at first, but really a mentor can be anyone. Someone who you see as successful in any aspect of a career, life, or personality; it could be a family member, a close family friend, a teacher or a coach, or someone you admire and would like to emulate. Students with a mentor are more likely to graduate high school, have more self-confidence and develop positive outlooks on life. In addition, they will acquire the necessary coping skills to handle the daily pressures of life. A mentor will not just give you a solution to your problems, but they will guide you in the right direction and allow you to find a solution on your own.
Knowing someone is there to help support your choices will provide you with the certainty to get out and try new things, to reach for your goals and to accomplish more than you ever thought possible. A mentor will advocate for you. They want to see you succeed and will put in the time and effort to ensure this. It takes a lot of work from both ends. They are there to support and advise you, but you will also need to be focused and actively working towards your goals. The mentor, mentee relationship is one that will grow over time. It will be difficult at times, but the rewards will far exceed the hardships.
