Super Bowl 50 and Sports Marketing

This weekend the most televised football game of the year will be played right here in the Bay Area. While most people are getting excited to see great plays and touchdowns by their favorite team, I personally am excited for the great commercials and the half time show!

The advertisements that are aired during the Super Bowl generate exposure for new campaigns and allow companies a chance to reinvent themselves. The marketing ideas are not limited to only television spots, they include everything from print ads, events, and social media campaigning; all of which can lead up to the big 30 second commercial.

Marketing and advertising positions are not easy jobs. It takes months of research and planning to figure out who the audience is and what it is that they want. Once a solid target and plan has been established, that’s when the fun begins. How can a brand creatively and entertainingly put their idea out into the world?

The ads that actually make it into the Super Bowl are probably version 5.6 of the original idea. The ad is first shown to focus groups where feedback is given. The agency will then go back and refine the ad further, until it achieves the reaction they are aiming for.

Sports is a billion dollar industry and is sponsored in part by advertising. When marketing during a sporting event, regardless of the game or sport, a company needs to focus on who’s going to be watching and how they will be watching it. They must consider what types of ads do they want shown in and around the stadium versus the types of ads people will be watching on television.

Agencies realize how important a spot in the Super Bowl is. They put in 100% of themselves, creatively and financially to ensure the best results for their brand. So while you are watching the big game, make sure to also watch the commercials to see what each agency has come up with. Learn more from our Senior VP marketing role model!
