Most high school seniors taking a humanities course have the same thoughts- “ Why do I need to know any of this? Reading stories about Greek Goddesses will not help me in my future.” The Ancient Greeks actually play a major role in philosophy and the understanding of human behavior. Humanities courses will open your mind to critical thinking and analysis of situations. The stories you read will help connect you to the past and bring a different perspective on life. Having this knowledge will contribute to you becoming a well-rounded individual.

As you move on to college and are faced with the tough decision of which major to begin, do not rule out a liberal arts degree. This is a degree that can catch the attention of many companies looking to hire college graduates. Employers, at the core, are looking for someone who can communicate clearly and have the ability to problem solve in a strategic and timely manner.

As for jobs, you have plenty of options: management positions, the public service sector, marketing and communications companies, and even law. It just depends on what your interests are and which path feels right for your life. While studying liberal arts will you get a broad overview of humanities, mathematics, art, and social and natural sciences. Some of the more common majors include, anthropology, political science, English and communication. The good thing about a liberal arts college is that you don’t need to decide right away. You can spend your first year or two taking different classes at an introductory level to get a better feel for what you think you want to pursue as a career.

So if you are undecided on a career, don’t get yourself down. That’s completely normal and you should use it to your advantage. Take as many classes as you can, try out different fields of interests until you find one you are passionate about.
