The Origins of a PR girl, turned IT Professional: Never say never! – Part 2 of 3

One day, as a senior in high school, my mom brought home a pamphlet for public relations (PR), and I knew that’s what I was meant to do…talk…and put my spin on things!  I graduated from Baylor University in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in public relations, a minor in business and a focus in French.

My first job out of college was as a live marketing manager in Austin, Texas.  Six months into the job, at age 22, our market was eliminated, and I had to lay off a team of people.  I loved Austin and had met a guy (who was my future husband), but after that humbling experience, I decided it was time to get closer to my roots.  I got a job as an admissions coordinator for the MBA and graduate programs in the Hankamer School of Business – back at Baylor!

As an admissions coordinator, I focused on recruiting for and marketing the graduate programs at Baylor to prospective students and applicants.  I was using my PR degree because I was ‘selling’ potential students on their future, their graduate degree and our school.  It was at this job that I was introduced to more technology, specifically software applications, which we seemed to use daily for every aspect of our jobs.

I quickly realized I had a knack for “IT-type” things, and I liked doing it, too!  I started a job search to turn my career focus on more of an IT-related path; however, I knew I wanted to stay in higher education, where I had found my passion.  In 2011, I stumbled across a job at the University of Colorado Boulder in the distributed IT group, Leeds Technology Services, within the Leeds School of Business and as they say “the rest is history”.

…Hold on tight for the conclusion next week to see what I’m up to now!
