Starting Your Network

You may have heard the time old saying “It’s all about who you know.” This seems pretty self-explanatory, but how do you start “knowing” people?

There are several things you could do while still in high school. The simplest is to get to know your teachers; becoming close to a few helpful faculty members will be beneficial when applying for colleges. If you have an interest in something such as engineering or photography, join after school groups and surround yourself with people who will lead to you in the right direction. These people will become the start of your network.

As you move on into college, it will become more important to start networking. Begin within your major and look for clubs in your department. Most schools at the beginning of the semester will have a club fair; you should go. You never know whom you may meet there!

Outside of your school, you can look for different organizations that interest you. There are plenty of STEM and arts programs that you can become involved with. Simply volunteering once a month can help you gain connections in your field. If you have a favorite company or group you admire, follow them on social media sites and look for conferences or summits that they might be hosting or attending. Then go! Make as many appearances as you can so you can begin creating connections.

Here in SF next week on Saturday October 15th, Career Girls is excited to be a part of the Bay Area’s first WorldWideWomen Girl’s Festival! This will be great opportunity to find programs that interest you. Career Girls will even have mini mentor sessions for you to ask our role models and other mentors questions first hand!  Visit the WorldWideWomen Girl’s Festival website for more information on the event and more resources that could help build your network!
