To be empowered is to be given the authority or power to do something. When it comes to our individual lives, we have complete power over what we want to achieve, this is the premise of “Self-Empowerment”. To be self-empowered is to be in charge of your life and do it your way. These are the steps that I have found to be most important in my road to empowerment.
The first (and most challenging) step is to know you. I believe that no one ever truly understands themselves because we are constantly changing. The reason I consider this a crucial step in my own empowerment process is because to be empowered is to be happy with your decisions. This can be done in many ways. The way I did this was by evaluating my previous decisions and deciding whether they were positive or negative. In addition, I decided whether these decisions were made to make myself happy or if they were made for some type of extrinsic reward. These evaluations helped me understand how and why I make decisions.
The final step is the start of making positive decisions and goals. Once I started to make choices that had a positive impact on my life and stopped to care about other people’s expectations for me, I felt empowered.
A prime example of empowerment in my life was my decision to transfer colleges! I realized that the path that I was on, was not the best for me. I would have never realized this if I hadn’t taken the time to get to know myself. After I reflected on my first semester at the college I attended, I knew that I was not fulfilled with my decision. My knowledge on my own levels of happiness told me, this school is not my school.
So, I decided I would transfer to a new school! I am incredibly happy knowing that I made this decision on my own, with my new knowledge about me. It felt amazing.
Becoming self-empowered does not happen over night, it takes some time to understand what is really right for you. It also doesn’t pertain to just huge or life altering decisions. It could be something as simple as waking up 5 minutes earlier to have time to meditate in the mornings or limiting your phone usage throughout the day to become more productive.
The rules in empowering you are for it to be positive and to have the intention of making yourself happy.
Good luck on your journey to self-empowerment!
