Exploring Career Fairs

By Katie Del Vecchio

Career Girls recently attended a career fair where we showcased our website and resources to young girls. Attending career fairs and events is part of our 24 month initiative to reach 100,000 girls in the Bay area. The 100,000 Girls project is a way to provide access to inspiring, educational, and empowering career role models, curriculum and a digital platform to help them achieve the careers of their dreams.

Career fairs, in particular,  are a great resource to learn about new careers or fields that you may not have thought about. They are not only to obtain a job but to learn about your options as well. We enjoy going out and showing how to use our website as a tool and resource for students and mentors alike. As part of our 100,000 girls project we are encouraging parents, teachers and group leaders to become an Ambassador and share our videos and learning guides with girls all across the Bay Area.

The fair we attended was STEM focused and had many tables with hand on activities to really get you involved in the subject. Gone are the days of brochures with images and long readings on a career. New technologies allow  fun ways to explore careers hands on, such as Virtual Reality or being apart of a short science experiment. These options put you right into a career and you will begin to think like a scientist, or an engineer. There will also be professionals available for you to ask questions and gain insights only found from working in the field. Starting a conversation or attending a demonstration is a great way to narrow your interests as you getting closer to deciding a career.

We at Career girls are all about exploring as many options as possible, because you don’t know what you like until you try it. Start broad, and try everything. You’ll probably learn what you don’t like before you find what you do, but that is part of the fun! New opportunities are being opened to you everyday, you just have to go out and discover them. Check out our Career Exploration 101 video which will introduce you to new careers!
