Summer is an Exciting Time

Summer is an exciting time! Two months of no schoolwork, with freedom, fun and sometimes, boredom. Some say boredom can lead to bad habits such as becoming lazy and losing interest in learning, but it doesn't have to. Boredom can lead to creativity and allows you to discover new hobbies and passions.

This summer, put the phone down and allow yourself to be bored. The constant need to have a phone in our hand is taking away from our ability to think freely and openly. Here are some things you can do embrace being bored.

1. Create a Boredom Jar- Write down activities you've wanted to try or places you’ve wanted to go and fill the jar. Have friends and family members also write down some ideas or hobbies they would enjoy. When you start to feel bored, reach into the jar and have some fun!

2. Learn Life Skills- The summer provides the chance to learn skills you aren't taught in school, such as cooking, financial literacy or learning how to survive without technology. These may sound like dull things to learn over the summer, but you will reap the benefits when you get to college and you’re the only one in the dorms who has enough money and knowledge to cook actual meals and will be able to entertain your friends when the Wi-Fi goes out.

3. Step out of your comfort zone and build your confidence. This is open to interpretation; the summer is a great time to explore and improve areas of your life you feel are lacking. Don’t feel like you should go all in all at once, start small. If you're afraid of public speaking, stand up at the dinner table and start reading your favorite poem. Your family or friends will be an easy audience to start with. Being confident will allow you to take more risks in life, and will teach you the skills you need to handle every obstacle you encounter.
