Get Hired for the Holidays

Seasonal jobs are great for teens and college students to earn extra cash on breaks. Having a seasonal job is not only financially rewarding but it also gives you extra experience to build into your resume. If you’re hesitant about starting a seasonal job we have some advice for you!

1) Start early. Most companies begin hiring holiday positions in early October, so while you start to shop online for your gifts, you might want to carve out an hour or two and begin your online job search. There are plenty of websites that can help you find seasonal work in your area.

2) Don’t knock retail until you’ve tried it. I know retail work may not be for everyone, but retailers offer flexible scheduling and allows you to build your customer service skills which is transferable to all careers. Plus if you can find a job at a store where you enjoy shopping, going to work won’t be so bad. And think about the discounts!

3) If retail is not your thing, try looking for outdoor seasonal activities such pumpkin or apple picking, a Ski lodge or a Christmas tree lot. These jobs can be hard work but a lot of fun and you will get to meet great people and stay active.

4) Don’t be worried if you are still away at school. Apply anyway. Most companies are very understanding. You can explain your situation and ask for a phone or Skype interview first. The point is to begin making connections with employers as soon as you can to help you stand out.

5) Learn something. No matter what the job is, you should try to find a takeaway, either good or bad. This is a great time to learn about different industries and to learn about yourself. You’re not going to love every job you have, but you can learn new skills and life lessons from each place and take it with you on your next adventure.
