Civil Engineer
Watch Charmin Roundtree-Baaqee, civil engineer and arts entrepreneur, share how she became an engineer at the East Bay Municipal Water District in Oakland, CA, because she wanted to be a community servant. In her job she is responsible for making sure users have safe, clean drinking water, and it was important for her to be in a profession where she can make a positive impact. She also has a creative side and rediscovered her love of art when she was asked to join the company’s art committee as part of its curating team. Her advice to girls is to embrace math because it is everywhere– from balancing a checkbook to counting beats in a dance class. And even if you had one math class that was difficult, don’t give up and you might find that a different class or different teacher opens the door to understanding and success in the subject.
