choosing and learning a language 81
Parents are often told they must choose one language to
communicate with their child and keep using it, no matter how
much or how little their child is learning. Sometimes health
workers encourage this, because they think one method is right
and the others are wrong. But no method is perfect.

children can learn to speak. This is not true, even though they may
introduce you to a child who
is deaf and who speaks perfectly.

practicing with them.

taught many years ago.
They may tell you that
you must use spoken
language with your
child or you are not
being responsible. This
